What is ADFS?
Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) is a Single Sign-On (SSO) solution created by Microsoft. It provides users with authenticated access to systems and applications using Active Directory, meaning that the user has a single login for multiple sites and/or applications. This makes accessing systems much easier, more secure and provides management with much better access control.
We could get into the technical aspects of how ADFS works… but that wouldn’t be overly interesting (although we’re pretty big fans!). What we really love about ADFS is the security and access control benefits that come along with it.
Account Creation
By using ADFS you’re able to grant new users access to systems from a single location. This ensures they have the correct level of access to the appropriate systems and applications required to complete their role or function with very little headache or confusion.
Access Removal
Revoking the access to all systems when a team member leaves the organisation is always problematic and time-consuming, and there’s always the risk something will be missed. An ADFS integration means the user’s access to the partner system is removed once their Active Directory account has been deactivated.
Experience for the user
With an ADFS integration users only need to remember a single login. Gone will be the days of forgetting your password for each and every application you use, or resetting your password every time you try to access the system because you can’t remember which password you used when you created an account! As a result of this, life becomes easier and faster for your team, and also makes users much less likely to scribble down passwords into a notepad to a sticky note and leave them lying around.
These are just a couple of the benefits that an ADFS integration brings, and we know from experience that our clients that use the solution love it. It’s very simple to get set up and requires little to no maintenance!
